Although slightly grainy, this option excels in darker settings, thanks to its higher ISO for low-light situations.

Shadows and Highlights

Shadows Tint

Digital cameras, despite having a wide dynamic range, can pose a challenge when attempting to take photos resembling those from film cameras.

highlights tint

This is because older film cameras capture a narrower dynamic range, resulting in softer highlights and shadows. To achieve a comparable effect, you can adjust your dark tones and shadows upward while toning down the highlights.

Pro Tips and Tactics

Typically, presets adjust the tone of the image, so it’s a good practice to select a preset before making manual tone adjustments.

Strong Shadows + Highlights (High Contrast): Energetic, dramatic, happy, focused and hot.

Soft Shadows + Highlights (Low Contrast): Calm, relaxed, melancholy, tired and cold.

STEP:3

Grain Tool

There is another tool which I use on rarely on VSCO app but I do apply it for my black and white DSLR photos. Why?

Adding grain tool to mobile photos can sometimes lower their quality if not applied carefully. I prefer a smooth, film-like quality in my black and white photography while maintaining color images.

By using the grain tool, I can introduce a subtle level of texture, as illustrated in the examples below.

Pro Tips and Tactics

Grain is typically applied subtly to color images. For a more aggressive look, increase the effect until it seems too strong, then adjust it to your preference, as there are no fixed rules for this.

For a closer look of the graining tool’s effect, simply pinch the screen to zoom in.

Remember that the grain’s size in your photo impacts its visibility. It becomes more pronounced on larger screens or in print. The editor’s phone screen offers a reliable preview of how the photo will appear on other mobile devices.
